Mind over Matter is a publication project dedicated to exploring the connection of generation z’s mental health challenges in Vancouver B.C. in relation to capitalism and neoliberal ideologies in society today. My intention is to create an experience for the audience to not only document individuals experiences but help combat their challenges through various design mediums, in order to incite a reaction to think deeper about the structures in place and the lack of resources prioritizing mental health in our society today.

Problem Space

This project explores different modalities representing the causes and effects of mental health on my generation; relating it to external factors such as capitalism and neoliberalism ideologies critiquing inequality-generating system It acts as a space of awareness and to bring about conversation surrounding mental health and wellbeing through a magazine; highlighting research and conversations surrounding individuals living in these certain conditions I will highlight not only the connections between these two topics in the problem space and provide insight to various tools to help bring about a healthy mindset.

In the circumstances of everyday life, worrying about bills, homework, laundry, and what the future could look like while dealing with the stress, anxiety, and depression that may come of all of these tasks. It is difficult to keep up not only with your mental state, but physical and emotional well being. In a society that seems to move too quick, how can we manage all of these tasks but still having the correct priorities?

Purpose

My intention is to create an experience for the audience to not only document individuals experiences but help combat their challenges through various design mediums, in order to incite a reaction to think deeper about the structures in place and the lack of resources prioritizing mental health in our society today.

Process Research

Diving in deeper into my theme for the project, I decided after multiple conversations with classmates and professor to become more concise in my idea, to discuss the project in a few sentences, to allow myself to narrow down on the overall theme of the project.

Informative magazine in order to highlight both mine, and my peers and fellow gen z generation coping with the mental health affects due to capitalistic society and neoliberalism ideologies in Vancouver BC. The magazine will highlight various interviews conducted regarding the topic, with photographs that are both personal and images of the interviewees.

The intimate relationship between mental health and social conditions has largely been obscured, with societal causes interpreted within a bio-medical framework and shrouded with scientific terminology. Diagnoses frequently begin and end with the individual, identifying causes at the expense of examining social factors. However, the social, political, and economic organization of society must be recognized as a significant contributor to people’s mental health, with certain social structures being more advantageous to the emergence of mental well-being than others.

Brand Identity

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Mind Over Matter is a brand that outlines a few keywords, including clean, cohesive, adaptable, approachable, aspirational, calm, and versatile. These words that represent the project are meant to remind the readers of the challenging subject matter, while providing an open space of awareness.
