An exploration of an immigrant’s childhood memories through a creature’s interaction with its house.

Artist Statement

The story of 聽ㄊ丨ㄥ嘸ㄇˊ ㄡ Tia-Buo examines my complicated feelings towards my Mandarin name through childhood memories of being an immigrant coming to Canada and the experiences of navigating culture, language and identity.

Having two names, one that was gifted to me by my grandma and one I gave myself at the age of seven, created an interesting dynamic. As I attempted to fit into Canada and escape the early negative experiences of immigration, I distanced myself from my Mandarin name. This consequence was that I became detached from my closest connection to my Taiwanese heritage. This animation film is a way for me to process my choices and come to better understand my evolving identity as a Taiwanese Canadian through reconnecting with my name.
