Artist Statement

Jade’s paintings work through colour, layers, textures, and washes, and her practice is often informed by the spaces around her. She experiments with her application of paint and colour, and how the painting can become a space that is both abstract and figurative-evoking forms that are reminiscent of landscapes or places from memory. Her paintings act as a way to play with her experiences in the world, in both urban and natural environments, and how she works through her identity in connection to space.

Jade Sawotin

Jade Sawotin works mainly in painting and photography but also works with mixed media, sound, film, installation, and digital mediums. From Calgary Alberta, she is currently living and studying in Vancouver at Emily Carr University to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in 2023. Through her studies at Emily Carr, she has expanded her interests and her art concerning the environment through both her photographic, painting and mixed media works. Through critical studies courses she has become interested in how her relationship with the environment exists more through connection rather than separation expanded through her Environmental, Animal Ethics, and Making Art with Trees course, which has greatly influenced her art practice. Some of Jade’s photography works have been shown in the WOO Publication’s Winter issue ORIGIN, the Fall issue NOSTALGIA, and the spring issue of PARADISE. She has also recently shown works in the exhibition I, in another way, co-curated with Marina Levit.
