When We Say No – Archiving Student Movement at Emily Carr University of Art + Design

A Book Project by steph schneider

Artist Statement

When We Say No documents resistance, particularly the Emily Carr “No More Tuition Increase” movement and student Walk-Out on December 1, 2022, protesting the proposed, and now passed 30% tuition increase for incoming International Students. This book is made to feel intimate, and emulate how many activist movements start– by whispering to a friend.

The photos; a story of their own, show that resistance often lives at the edges and begins on the ground. With the hopes of ripples and echos of resistance to come, this book will be available both digitally and physically, as open source, and sold at cost to remain as accessible as possible for the incoming and current Emily Carr community.
