G A O N O O R I – 가온을 누리라.

G A O N O O R I [CENTRALITY]: A bridge between cultural duality

[가온누리]: G A O N O O R I

[gaon-noori] – Korean

(n.) maintain your centre wherever you find yourself in the world.

GAONOORI FOCUSES ON THE NOTION OF CENTRALITY.

TO MAINTAIN YOUR CENTER WHEREVER YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE WORLD.

IT IS EASY TO BE PULLED TO ONE SIDE AND LOSE BALANCE AS A WHOLE.

GAONOORI IS A SERIES OF SUPPORTS THAT REMINDS ONE TO STAY GROUNDED.

TO BRING FORTH KOREAN TRADITION OF HARMONIZING WITH THE SURROUNDING SPACE.

THIS PROJECT DESIRES TO BE A COMPASS FOR INDIVIDUALS  LOST IN CULTURAL DUALITY.  THROUGH THE LENS OF

TRADITIONAL KOREAN ARTISTRY, IT CARRIES HISTORY, MEMORIES AND CULTURE. TO SOME, IT MAY BE A

REMINDER OF A PAST TRADITION AND TO SOME AN INTRODUCTION TO A TRADITION. THIS IS NOT SIMPLY AN

ARTIFACT BUT A TOOL OF ENGAGEMENT AND REST.

CREATING A SACRED ATMOSPHERE OF TUNING DOWN WHICH IN TURN URGES ONE TO BE MINDFUL OF THE SPACE.

THE ACTIONS GROUNDED ARE SIT, LEAN, REST, & SUPPORT. EACH PIECE CELEBRATES AN ACTION.

IT ALLOWS ONE TO SEE THE CENTER,

WHERE ONE CAN BE THE CENTER

AND HOLDS THE CENTER.

THERE IS A KOREAN PHRASE PAST DOWN FOR CENTURIES,

“노가리 까다” WHICH TRANSLATES TO THE ACTION OF CONSTANTLY CHATTING

FOR HOURS ON END ABOUT THINGS FROM THE MOST FRUITFUL TO THE MOST INANE.

THIS IS A SET TRADITION OFTEN SEEN IN PROXIMITY TO THE GROUND.

MOMENTS LIKE THIS CREATE A SPACE FILLED WITH JOY.

THE AIM WAS TO CENTER ON THE EMOTION OF “LAON” MEANING JOY

AND THE “NANOOM”, THE SHARING OF THAT PLEASURE.

‘ 가온누리 ’ 이라는  ‘ 가운데 ’ 라는 뜻의  ‘ 가온 ’

세상을 뜻하는  ‘ 누리 ’ 가 합쳐진 말로,

‘ 어떠한 일이 있어도 세상의 중심이 되어라. ’ 라는 뜻입니다.

이 작품은 저의 중심인 어머니와 어머니의 중심이자

저의 할머니를 생각하며 만든 작품입니다.

[한결같이]: BE STEADY

GAONOORI IS A REMINISCENCE OF A CHILDHOOD MEMORY

AND MY DEFINITION OF HOME THAT I LOST TOUCH OF.

THIS WORK HOLDS THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE.
